Coppa Bernocchi

Restless Spanish youngster gets 1k from victory in Legnano after making part of the day's breakaways and attacking again at the final circuit after getting caught. Two top-ten placings with Sanz (7th), Visconti (8th)

Movistar Team had a very moving debut in the Trittico Lombardo, taking the curtain up this Thursday in northern Italy with the 200-kilometer 94th Coppa Bernocchi in Legnano. The squad directed by Yvon Ledanois showed active in all phases of the race as they contested the victory already from the Valle Olona central loop: firstly pushing at the bunch, trying to chase down the initial nine-man move; and then, making a second attempt of eight riders with Ángel Madrazo as Blue representative, in pursuit of a previous attack from Alexandr Pliuschin (LET). The group, which earned a two-and-a-half minute gap over the bunch, was reeled back in at the final 15k by a bunch in search for the bunch sprint, still about to find surprises.

Eventually, it would be Madrazo himself who, after the numerous attacks in the final two laps were closed, jumped solo with just over 4k from the end, being beaten under the flamme rouge by a short counter-attack where Giovanni Visconti kept the Blue flag flying high. The Sicilian profited from a good position into the sprint to end up in 8th -with Enrique Sanz, jumping from behind, was 7th- at Modolo’s (COG) victory in front of team-mate Colbrelli. Act two will come on Friday with the Coppa Agostoni: 196.5km from Monza to Lissone with four categorized climbs.
