Tour of Guangxi (et. 4)

Spaniard in the mix alongside Dayer Quintana (20th) at decisive Mashan Nongla finishing climb. Pile-up on foot of ascent affects Héctor Carretero; no injuries.

Belgian Tim Wellens (LTS) is the new leader of the 2017 Tour of Guangxi after beating the best climbers in contention at the decisive, hilltop finish in Mashan Nongla. The 3km, 6% average gradient ascent wrapped up Sunday’s 151km stage four from Nanning, capital of the Chinese province which is holding the final event of the 2017 UCI WorldTour.

Calm in most of its proceedings as every stage since the race started on Thursday, the bunch shook with fear in the finale as a pile-up broke the pace at the run-in to the finish, inside the final 6km. The incident affected one of the Movistar Team’s riders, Héctor Carretero, who was fortunately still able to reach the finish without any major injuries.

Ahead of the Spaniard finished two youngsters from the telephone squad: Jesús Herrada, 11th at the finish (+25″) and now 12th overall; and Dayer Quintana, who managed to take 20th place (+48″). Both will try to keep or improve his currently placings at two rolling days still to go in Guangxi, starting with Monday’s ‘marathon’ 212km route to Guilin – which includes three Cat-3 climbs in the second part of the race.
