Score

The Movistar Team is, undoubtedly, the biggest protagonist in the Vuelta a Burgos' history. The squads managed by Eusebio Unzué have claimed eleven GC wins in the Spanish race, three of them with riders still active: Alejandro Valverde, in 2009, and Nairo Quintana, with back-to-back triumphs in 2013 and 2014. 24 stage wins, the latest to date with Carlos Barbero in Clunia, also emblazon the Blues' palmarès in the event, available in full at our website's History Stats section.

Analysis

“An XL race.” That was the word game used by the organisers -due to the 40th edition of the event, held in 2018- to celebrate the long tradition of a well-established summer stagerace, one which the Movistar Team holds very much dear. The Vuelta a Burgos will be using all of its characteristic finishes from the 2017 edition, with the two mountain-top finishes which brought final success to current Blue member Mikel Landa again used in this year’s route.

The hors categorie Picón Blanco, final climb of the 149km stage three (Thursday 9th August), and the traditional Lagunas de Neila (141km, Saturday 11th), once again a 12km ascent from the foot of its traditional slope at Quintanar de la Sierra, will be the must-watch finishes of a race which will first split up at the Alto del Castillo -two climbs on the opening stage, Tuesday 7th-, and see another battle for sprinters and GC men alike in Clunia‘s uphill (Friday 10th).
