Superb display of quality on Belgian soil
Movistar Team leader delights his fans with notable performance in Dwars door Vlaanderen, just three days after his Volta a Catalunya victory.
Very few riders in the world can aspire to beat world-class climbers at stage races and then go on and fight, few days later, against classics specialists on the cobblestones of the finest Belgian races. Alejandro Valverde (Movistar Team) proved once again to be one of those chosen to shine everywhere with a strong display at Wednesday’s Dwars door Vlaanderen (UCI WorldTour, 180km), where, without any racing experience for the past few years in such events, he seriously aimed at a victory.
The marvel from Murcia had a constantly relevant role at the front of the field during the final 60km, following some of the favourites’ moves -like those by Zdenek Stybar (QST), after the Taaienberg hill, or John Degenkolb (TFS), on the slopes of the Kruisberg- and even going himself on the attack.

The relentless moves, rain, cold conditions, strong and winds and a five-man echelon formed with 20km remaining -which Yves Lampaert (QST) took advantage from inside the last two kilometers to claim back-to-back wins in Waregem- ended up taking Alejandro out of the fight for success. Valverde still claimed a fantastic 11th spot, which also reinforces his lead in the UCI WorldTour individual ranking, which he rose to after winning the Volta a Catalunya just three days ago.
