Opening race of the World Championships
Telefónica-backed squad 1’30” behind winners Quick Step in really fast, yet hilly and demanding, event in Austria.
Quick Step took on Sunday their fourth victory in seven editions of the World Team Time Trial Championships, whose final installment was held over a very demanding 62km course in Innsbruck, Austria. The race, which will not be held again next year as part of the Worlds programme, witnessed a very decent performance from the Movistar Team, whose members’ climbing abilities on a course including one very significant ascent -the 4km long Axams climb- propelled the Blues to give their maximum against those squads with the best rouleurs.
Amador, Anacona, Erviti, Oliveira, Soler and Sütterlin improved their 7th place (22km in) through the fast early section and took advantage from the uphill part to close in on a top-5 finish which they came half a minute short to. It was eventually a 6th spot for the Blues, whose best result in the TTT Worlds will remain on the books as the bronze medal they took three years ago in Richmond (2015). Monday will bring the national teams take over the scene in Austria, with Jaime Castrillo taking part in his first of two races this week at the U23 World Championships.
