4th overall in Switzerland

Catalan from Movistar Team takes 8th at TT showdown in Fribourg, leaves great impression on Helvetic soil with stage win on Friday as Giro roster shows consistency.

A satisfactory taste – even wanting more – is what is left from Marc Soler’s (Movistar Team) performance in the 2021 Tour de Romandie, coming to its end on Sunday with Geraint Thomas (IGD) taking overall after being the strongest of the GC contenders in the difficult, technical 16km TT showdown in Fribourg.

The final route in Switzerland, over difficult descents, wet surface and even a cobbled slope to be covered on Canyon Speedmax time trial bikes, witnessed a notable effort from Soler, 8th today, 34″ off winner Rémi Cavagna (DQT). The result meant Marc overtook two of the riders ahead of him in the GC overnight: race leader Michael Woods (ISN) –own to 5th today- and Ben O’Connor (ACT). However, he was bested by two great specialists: Richie Porte (IGD), 2nd to Thomas, and more importantly Fausto Masnada (DQT), 1″ quicker than the Vilanova native, 4th in the final overall.

Miguel Ángel López completed at a nice level, with no setbacks, his comeback race in Switzerland. (c) Movistar Team

It was still a good result for the José Luis Arrieta / Chente García Acosta-led squad in the French-speaking cantons of Switzerland, with Marc’s stage success in Estavayer on Friday; the overall strength of the Giro roster; and Miguel Ángel López’s comeback, the Colombian just over 1′ off the winner on Sunday’s TT.
