Analysis

The postponement of the Ronde van Drenthe, a Dutch WorldTour race usually held on the second Sunday of March, has taken no less than five WorldTour squads, including the Movistar Team, to line up at a modest newcomer to the UCI calendar: the Flemish event GP Oetingen (1.2), held at the municipality of Gooik -which was already hosting a men’s race, the Gooikse Pijl (1.1), and usual finish place for the current Brabantse Pijl, formerly known as Gooik-Geraardsbergen-Gooik-.

The streets of the small village of Oetingen are the start and finish of a ten-lap circuit of about 12km, crossing through the nearby towns of Lieferinge and Niegem (quite close to Ninove / Meerbeke, finish for last month’s Omloop Het Nieuwsblad and former end of the Ronde van Vlaanderen). A short ascent of 500m, Bergstraat, with average slopes of 8.5%, is the main breaking point of an event otherwise flat and with long straights, yet as difficult as any other Belgian event into the wind, over some urban cobblestones and with road furniture always becoming a threat.
