Analysis

The 2021 UCI Women’s WorldTour starts with the grueling Strade Bianche in Tuscany, a race which, with its identical-to-2020, 136km route with eight ‘sterrato’ sections, will mark Annemiek van Vleuten’s second appearace in Movistar Team colours. The European champion will defend her brilliant victory from last August.

Most of the gravel roads will be covered in the first half of the race, most notably the longer sections of Ville di Corsano (25 > 32km) and San Martino in Grania (68 > 77km), both with some steep gradients. The race will offer no respite in its last 40km, with the final ‘sterrato’ sectors of Vico d’Arbia (112km), Colle Pinzuto (117km) and Le Tolfe (km 123); some little ascents in the approach to Siena; and the 16% slopes of the Via Santa Caterina towards the finish at Piazza del Campo.
