Analysis

This Milano-Torino is not like in previous years. The rearrangement of the big Italian classics in the post-pandemic calendar took the oldest race of the European calendar (first edition in 1876) to a slot as prelude of Milano-Sanremo, which will be held on Saturday 8th. And for that reason, the otherwise climbing course has become a ‘final rehearsal’ of what the big names hoping to win the ‘Classicissima’ could find three days later.

There’s no single categorized climb in the 198km parcours from Mesero -30km west from Milano- to Stupinigi, which had already hosted the finish of the Gran Piemonte two years ago (that race will come a week after ‘MiTo’). The only significant elevations will be overcome halfway through the course, and the last 50 kilometers will be pan-flat. A roundabout with 2km to go and a turn left with 400m remaining are the only major obstacles for the sprinters’ teams.
