Analysis

It was the first stagerace of the UCI WorldTour cancelled due to the pandemic, and as it returns to the calendar in a new September slot – well, it’s grown! RCS will have an eighth day of racing added to Tirreno-Adriatico, which has otherwise stayed with a route very similar to the one proposed in its original March schedule, with days for the sprinters, mountain stages, classic-like routes and the traditional individual time trial to finish in San Benedetto del Tronto (Monday 14th).

To reach the Marche region, though, the riders will have to cover another seven days, starting in Tuscany. Two fast finishes in Camaiore (Monday 7th) and Follonica (Tuesday 8th) will preceed a first difficult day towards Saturnia (Wednesday 9th), with several little climbs, an uphill finish and the Poggio Murella just 9km from the end, to split the peloton.

On Thursday 10th, the peloton will tackle the first mountain stage, over the Forca di Gualdo, Rifugio Perugia and Ospedaletto, the latter just 12km from the end in Cascia. Friday 11th, the Queen stage will take the riders over 202km of lumpy roads and the 13km long Sassotetto climb at the end. And before the decisive TT, a predictable third sprint in Senigallia (Saturday 12th) and a demanding circuit around Loreto (Sunday 13th), including another tough finishing slope.
