Pasamontes closes great race on home soil
02 May 2011

Luis Pasamontes came into 5th place at the final overall classification of the 55th Vuelta a Asturias, the home race for the Spanish rider from Movistar Team, always fighting within the best riders of a demanding five-day event on Northern lands.

The race concluded today with the traditional Subida al Naranco, which came located into this year’s Vuelta with some changes on its route to make things harder before the final climb. Pasamontes eventually took 8th in the climb near Oviedo, after yet another ride under the rain where Zaballa (MIE), stage winner, and Moreno (CJR), final victor, took the biggest prizes over the podium, where Pasamontes collected the mention as the best Asturian on the GC.

Overview from José Luis Jaimerena: “The race’s outcome for us was really marked by the crash we suffered on stage 1, and even before that with Madrazo’s miss, Ángel being a rider which could have done well here. We lost Amador; Iriarte and Oyarzun also lost much time, and after that we had to set everything into an order again. We can’t criticise much from the attitude and presence of the team on this race because, apart from today, I think we made all main breakaways. We fought all race and it was a pity we couldn’t take it to success because, specially in the ITT, we were really close. Before the start and looking at how hard this Vuelta was, we knew that maybe we were not having riders for the overall victory, but we made it there, always with an ‘almost’ in our lips, that’s why we went off with no victories. Pasamontes did well all race long, just keeping the way he’s done during the season, just like the team. He had taken some rest before the Giro and asking more from him would have been too much.”
