Route

Agliè - Santuario di Oropa (183km)
10 October

Analysis

The Gran Piemonte changes its route completely for 2019, heading towards one of the most famous climbs in the recent history of the Giro d’Italia: the Santuario di Oropa (11.8km at 6.2%), whose slopes turn the race into a true climber’s course, with only the best mountain specialists in the world able to triumph.

As in most races in the late part of the season, the early section of the 183km parcours from Agliè is mainly flat, only getting more difficult with 37km to go, as the bunch tackles a long previous climb to Nelva -13km with tough slopes and a small descent halfway through-. From its top (-23km), a short, fast downhill to Biella will take the riders to the foot of Oropa, a good position over the downhill key to start the decisive climb with an edge on the rivals.
