Five days with approximately 3,000m elevation gain at each, into stages never exceeding 170km. You can really see a pattern and menu at the Tour of the Alps: five routes full of mountains and the toughest climbs -with barely a few exceptions- so far this year, in a magnificent region (Trentino – Alto Adige – Südtirol) in visual and sporting senses.
Looking at the profiles, the three opening stages might be the most decisive for the overall result. The finish in Alpbach on stage one (Monday 17th) takes the race through the Kerschbaumber -5.2km at 10.1% (!!)- just before the finish; we then head towards Ritten / Renon on Tuesday 18th, with the combined Barbiano (Cat-3) / Monte di Mezzo (Cat-2) just 4km before the end; and on Wednesday 19th, the peloton takes on arguably the Queen stage, over the Lago di Cei (Cat-2) plus the long San Valentino (Cat-1; almost 16km at 7.5%) as mountain-top finish.
The last two stages end down the mountains: Thursday 20th, we get to Predazzo after the early Passo di Sommo (Cat-1) and the Pramadiccio (Cat-2) with 15km to go, then on Friday 21st, the race gets to its last finish in Brunico, after the Romolino (Cat-2) with 21km remaining.
