Intxausti and Pasamontes in the fight
01 May 2011

With Beñat Intxausti in the Tour de Romandie and local Luis Pasamontes in Vuelta a Asturias, Movistar Team has battled throughout the two races of the week, in which riders of the telephone squad are now in the fifth position on the GCs, headed respectively by Evans (BMC) and Moreno (CJR).

In Switzerland, with just one stage left, a change in wind direction and intensity has affected the last riders to depart and has been decisive for the outcome of the 20-kilometer individual time trial. This has implied that the favorites have been unable to get close to the day’s best times. Beñat Intxausti performed a great second half of the race and moved to fifth place on the GC, just 20 seconds behind of a podium which seems very complicated to assault tomorrow since the route is not so difficult on its final way to Ginebra. Movistar Team also keeps their other two honor positions on the GC: David Lopez (12th) and Rui Costa (18th) -marked by its prologue’s fall-.

On the other hand, in Asturias, the Queen stage has been marked by the heavy rain that cyclist have had to battle in the last part of the stage. Imanol Erviti has been one of the heroes of the day with a long breakaway of nearly 180 kilometers that was to end at the start of final ascent to El Acebo (HC). An ambitious Luis Pasamontes reached the breakaway at that moment and he was the virtual leader of the GC for a few moments. However, the Spaniard took down the leading group when there were 3 kms to the finish. Pasamontes eventually lost a minute and a half, but he remains in the  general classification’s top-5. There was also a remarkable performance by Chilean Carlos Oyarzun and Navarrese Javier Iriarte, 10th and 15th respectively, at the finish line. The mountain will have to wait two days until Monday’s Subida al Naranco: tomorrow, previously, an opportunity to adventurers or sprinters in the Pravia-Oviedo stage.
