On the attack in Italy

Polish rider from Movistar Team again into late breakaway in third event of 2018 UCI Women's WorldTour; 'Jasi' finishes inside main bunch along with Mavi García, one minute behind winner Niewiadoma (CSR).

Two riders from Poland made most of the day’s headlines at the third stop of the UCI Women’s WorldTour, the 41st Trofeo Alfredo Binda in Cittiglio (131km). While youngster Kasia Niewiadoma (CSR) tore the bunch apart with a strong attack for the win into the decisive climb to Orino, one of the Movistar Team ladies, experienced allrounder Małgorzata Jasińska, showed power and courage with a late move against some of the world’s best on the last two laps of a demanding circuit in Italy.

Joined by American Megan Guarnier (DLT), winner of the 2016 Giro Rosa, ‘Jasi’ reached down the two girls leading the way at that moment Ane Santesteban (ALE) and Alena Amialiusik (CSR). The four-woman group increased its gaps to nearly one minute over the field, with only huge pace from Wiggle, Sunweb and, most notably, the favourites’ attacks on the penultimate climb, Casale, made the junction with 12km to go.

The big effort by Jasińska saw her dropping back in Orino to the main peloton, which finished exactly one minute behind her fellow countrywoman, in company of Spaniard Mavi García. In turn, Alicia González wasn’t able to keep the front group as she suffered a crash –fortunately, with no serious injuries– with 1km remaining. The squad directed by Jorge Sanz thus completes yet another top-ranked event in the mix before taking on a series of demanding races in Belgium, over cobblestones, for the next two-and-a-half weeks.
