Analysis

Just like every year, ‘stage 22’ of the Tour de France is held on our home territory. The province of Gipuzkoa, in the Basque Country, holds the 39th edition of the ‘Klasikoa’ which continues to add demanding climbs in its 2019 route, one of the most mountainous races in the UCI WorldTour.

Originally the main ascent of the Clásica, the Alto de Jaizkibel (7km, 6.2% avg.) is not ‘just’ the fourth of seven rated climbs. It will be crested 94km before the finish, after the previous côtes of Meaga (27km), Iturburu (60km) and Alkiza (79km).

The last three climbs are set to create the real impact in the race. Erlaitz (158km), back to the route with its brutal 3.8km at nearly 11% avg., and the two climbs of the Monte Igeldo in the final circuit. The first one will be Mendizorrotz (-37km), with 4km at 7.3% and maximum slopes of 19%; the other one, Murgil (-8km), features 2.1 kilometers at 10.1% (!!).
