21-year-old German from Movistar Team keeps front of opening Italian road race until last 25km in well-fought effort.
Bauke Mollema (TFS) took the solo victory at the end of the 58th edition of the Trofeo Laigueglia (UCI ProSeries), which had the honour in 2021 of opening the long Italian road race calendar with its 202km lumpy course in the Ligurian coast. A race which also had protagonism from one of the Movistar Team’s young hopefuls, 21-year-old German Juri Hollmann.
An eleven-man breakaway, originated after about 25km, forced Juri to make an extra effort to join the move after trailing by some ground, having not initially entered the group. Once in, the Cologne-based cyclist was one of the strongest in the field, staying at the front as the final four local laps -with the climbs of Colla Micheri and Capo Mele- started, alongside Mattia Bais (ANS) and Nicolas Edet (COF).
Hollmann’s break was captured with only 25km remaining by a group of favourites which would end up contesting the win. A nice action from the sophomore WorldTour pro, who continues to learn and progress in the Telefónica-backed squad’s colours.
