Analysis

The peculiarities of the 2021 early-season calendar have led the Movistar Team into a beautiful race in Italy, not a regular feature in their calendar yet really interesting this year as it opens the country’s pro schedule. The Trofeo Laigueglia, held every winter at a coastal area halfway through Savona and Sanremo, offers a route quite typical at Italian semiclassics, offering chances to every rider yet apt, above all, for riders who do well at short, steep climbs, lumpy courses and difficult descents.

Before reaching the final loop around Laigueglia (four laps), the 202km course tackles some longer ascents, such as Bezzo (28km), Cima Paravenna (68km) and Testico (122). The race will then descend back to the coast to face the decisive climbs: 4x the Colla Micheri (2.2km at 7.4%) and 4x the Capo Mele (2.2km at 3.2%), well known from its numerous passages in the ‘Classicissima’, to be climbed for the last time just 3km before the end.
