Analysis

The 31st Clásica de Almería keeps alive a spirit – so uncommon within the panorama of Spanish professional cycle races – of bringing top sprinters to the fore and into contention. The last few editions of the race have also repeated a scheme of starts and finishes switching between only two cities: Almería and Roquetas del Mar, which will again be the depart and arrival points of this 185.1km event in 2018.

In fact, all climbs will be condensed into the first half of the race, with Cuesta Blanca (Cat-3; 40km), Lucainena (Cat-4; 85km), Balcón de Sierra Alhamilla (Cat-3, 88km) and Turrilas (Cat-2; 92km) all covered before the race gets back on the road they headed for on their way out of Almería, through Tabernas, Rioja y Viator (map). The final kilometers will be dangerous because of the coastal winds blowing on the road to Roquetas, with echelons usually forming in previous editions.
