Score

The Movistar Team is, undoubtedly, the biggest protagonist in the Vuelta a Burgos’ history. The squads managed by Eusebio Unzué have claimed eleven GC wins in the Spanish race, three of them with riders still active: Alejandro Valverde, in 2009, and Nairo Quintana, with back-to-back triumphs in 2013 and 2014. 25 stage wins, the latest to date with Carlos Barbero in Clunia, also emblazon the Blues’ palmarès in the event, available in full at our website’s History Stats section.

Analysis

Loyal to a very much recognisable pattern in the last few years, with interesting finishes all around, the Vuelta a Burgos reaches its 41th edition with a route where only stage two changes from last year. On Wednesday 14th, the riders will head towards Lerma, with an uphill finish -all five in this year’s race have a final slope- on the cobblestones that cover the road to the Ducal Palace (6% gradient).

The other four finishes are very much known. There will be two stages for tough, fast finishers: day one (Tuesday 13th), at the Castillo de Burgos (1km at 5%), and stage four (Friday 16th), in Clunia, a longer climb (2km at 5% max) towards the ‘Roman City’. The decisive climbs, though, will be the HC ascents of Picón Blanco -st. 3, Thursday 15th-, after four other rated climbs, and the traditional Lagunas de Neila -Saturday 17th-, which will end the race.
