Analysis

Following the path they started building up over the last few years with the Clásica San Sebastián, the Itzulia Basque Country’s organisers, OCETA, are pushing -with same live TV coverage, race infrastructure and routes similar to those of their men’s races- the first edition of the women’s Itzulia, over three demanding stages -fortunately, looks like with good weather!- the climbers will surely make the most of.

All three Basque provinces -Álava, Vizcaya and Guipúzcoa, in that order- will be the venues for the race, starting with the Vitoria – Labastida stage one (Friday 13th), featuring the climbs of Zaldiaran (Cat-3), Mirador de Rivas (Cat-3) and Herrera (Cat-3) before a tough finishing slope (max 20%).

Stage two (Saturday 14th) will be a tough one in and around Mallabia, over the ascents of Areitio (Cat-3) -as in the previous day, a climb right from the start-, Montecalvo (Cat-3), Balcón de Vizcaya (Cat-3), Milloi (Cat-3), Trabakua (Cat-3) and Karabieta (Cat-1), followed by another uphill finish. The showdown (Sunday 15th) will be a repeat from the 2021 Klasikoa which Annemiek van Vleuten won, over 139km and the climbs of Aia (Cat-3), Jaizkibel (Cat-2), Gurutze (Cat-2) and Murgil Tontorra (Cat-2).
