Analysis

A Sanremo like we remembered. After having to scrap, due to force majeure, its first main climb in 2021, and following a revamp of its course in the summer of 2020 as many towns didn’t want to have it due to the pandemic, the ‘Classicissima’ returns in 2022 to its ‘canon parcours’, with the Turchino and the Riviera Ligure as main protagonists of the longest race of the season (293km).

The biggest change will be the start, from the legendary, renovated Velodromo Vigorelli, part of the history of Italian cycling. After getting through the climb dividing the interior and the coast after 142km, the race will go down to the shore and seek for the ‘Capi’: the Capo Mele (241km), the Capo Cervo (246km) and the Capo Berta (254km), of increased difficulty.

From there, the riders will tackle the two decisive ascents: Cipressa (277km; 5.6km at 4.1%), always covered at full speed, usually creates a first selection which continues at the flat section afterwards, with attacks leading up to the decisive Poggio (293km; 3.7km at 3.7%), where the crucial moves happen before the finish at the Via Roma.
