Analysis

After previous editions when the last finish line in Geneva was reached after a road stage, the 2019 Tour de Romandie brings back its tradition of holding two individual time trials: a short prologue to start, then a longer, more demanding showdown. It will thus be a 3.87km prologue in Neuchâtel kicking things off (Tuesday 30th), with a short, sharp slope at the Rue du Château (200m at 13%), and a 17km ITT to finish, over two slight ascents yet with not-so-intense ramps before heading down and back towards the city.

Between those, the riders tackling this race in the French-speaking part of Switzerland will find the ‘usual suspects’, a series of classic, well-known routes. Lumpy stages, such as the one to La Chaux-de-Fonds (Wednesday 1st May) with five Cat-2 Climbs, or the uphill finish (6%) in Romont (Friday 3rd), after plenty of small ascents. There will also be a chance for the sprinters, in Morges (Thursday 2nd), and a big mountain stage on Saturday 4th, over Sorens (Cat-2), Jaunpass (Cat-1), Saanenmöser (Cat-2) and the Col des Mosses (Cat-1) + a finish in Torgon (Cat-1; 11.6km at 8.3%).
