Analysis

Strade Bianche goes back in 2021 to its traditional March slot, after being held in August last year due to the pandemic. The Tuscan race was actually the first WorldTour event to be suspended due to the outbreak of a health crisis whose effects still take lives away from us at this point. Against that, and through strict protocols, cycling continues to try and find its way with a race whose main characteristic are the ‘sterrati’, the gravel roads around Siena.

This year’s route is practically the same as in 2020, with 184 kilometers and eleven sections of ‘white roads’. The first few ones are long; the last four are shorter and decisive. As the race reaches the Monte Sante Marie (130km), the peloton usually explodes with pace changes, punctures, crashes and high nerves. The uphill sectors of Vico d’Arbia (160km), Colle Pinzuto (164km) and Le Tolfe (171km) are, together with some some slopes later on and the brutal finish up Via Santa Caterina (maximum slopes of 16%) decide the outcome at the beautiful Piazza del Campo.
