A really welcome addition to the ever-growing Spanish women’s pro cycling calendar, the Vuelta a Andalucía opens its history with a not-so-usual, weekday format (three stages), yet with attractive, challenging routes, suited for all kinds of riders. The Movistar Team comes here with lots of motivation as they start a three-week tournée on home roads.
The irregular climb to Arenas (with a 3km, 7% section halfway through) and a final slope at 6% will decide stage one (Tuesday 3rd), always near the coast and with some rolling hills early on. Stage two (Wednesday 4th), Málaga to Mijas, will reach further into the interior, with the Puerto de Ardales (non-categorized) near the mid point and the steep La Mar slope (Cat-3; 9%) just 4km from the end.
The Queen stage should be the last one (Thursday 5th), over the Puerto de la Cruz (Cat-2; 5km at 5%) and, more importantly, the tough Hacho de Gaucín (Cat-1; 7km at 7.5%), though its summit will be 40km away from the last finish line in Castellar.
