Analysis

The ‘hilly trio’ of classics in the Netherlands and Belgium starts for the Movistar Team and the WorldTour peloton with Amstel Gold Race, always a technical, restless course. Up to 33 ascents in the Limburg region are overcome into a race otherwise perfectly recognisable, whose route hasn’t changed much in recent years.

Differently from the women’s event, the Cauberg is not the final climb here. It’s actually crested just twice into the 253km parcours: one with eightly kilometers to go, after no less than 20 previous climbs, and another one at the finishing loop, 19km before the end, with another two bergen -Geulhemmerberg and Bemelerberg- before a flat finish in Berg en Terblijt.

Between those ascents will be a succession of six ascents key for the final selection in the bunch: Loorberg (-51km), Gulperberg (-45km), Kruisberg (-40km), Eyserbosweg (-38km), Fromberg (-33km) and, most importantly, Keutenberg (-28km), whose slopes up to 20% should be decisive.
