Analysis

The Navarra Classics have ‘lost’ in 2023 one of their two days of racing, though their category is up: the race is now a UCI ProSeries event, the echelon immediately behind the Women’s WorldTour. For this year’s event, the organisers have decided to use the course in and around Pamplona, a hilly route that opens room to many kinds of riders where a solo or small-group arrival is the most likely scenario.

The 135km parcours features nine ascents: Olaverri (24km) early on; Tiebas (53km), Biurrun (57km), Tirapu (66km), Añorbe (80km) and the cobbled ‘wall’ of Artajona (90km), halfway through; and the three decisive ones: the long El Perdón (114km); Zariquiegui (119km); and the short, steep Galar, just 9km from the end.
