Giro d'Italia (st. 11)

Spaniard unable to go through crash in final turn, left with no chance in the final rush after a great move from Visconti in the final ascent

Whil last Monday’s crash in the final kilometer before the sprint opened Fran Ventoso’s chances for his spectacular victory, another incident in the turn prior to the final straight in Montecatini Terme ruined the Spaniard’s chances to take his second success in the 2012 Giro d’Italia. The Movistar Team came in a perfect 7th position into the curve, but the crash by Sacha Modolo (COG) blocked his way to the triumph.

It would have been the icing on top of a great performance from the telephone squad, as Giovanni Visconti attacked in the Cat. 4 climb located just 11k from the finish of a monster 258-kilometer stage, almost seven hours on the bike. Visconti broke the peloton into three echelons, but his move ended up regrouped with a big bunch including all Movistar Team riders, Roberto Ferrari (AND) taking the rush. Thursday will bring another complicated stage on day twelve: 155 kilometers from Seravezza to Sestri Levante, with several categorized climbs through a difficult land in the Liguria, also including the ascent to Villa Tassani (5k / 6%) with only 12k to go.
