Rui Costa awarded Portuguese Sports Personality of the Year after overcoming list of candidates including world-class football player Cristiano Ronaldo in both fans and jury ballots

The extraordinary 2012 season by Portuguese Rui Costa, winner of the Tour de Suisse and best Lusitan rider ever in the World Championships at the road race held in Valkenburg, as well as top-ten finish in the WorldTour ranking, found its prize on Thursday at the Casino Estoril, the venue for a 17th Portuguese Sports Confereration’s Gala that gave its diplomas and trophies to the best athletes, teams and hopefuls in this Olympic year.

Costa was selected as the male sportsman of the year after winning a double, compensated vote between fans from Portugal and all over the world and a jury of renowned experts, beating football striker Cristiano Ronaldo, London silver medalist Fernando Pimienta (canoeing), table tennis player Marcos Freitas and paralympic athlete Lenine Cunha. Absent at Estoril’s gala as he stays with his Movistar team-mates at the pre-season camp coming to an end in Gorraiz (Navarra) today, his girlfriend Carla took the prestigious honours in his behalf.
