Fran Ventoso claims 6th place in Roquetas de Mar to complete a brilliant Spanish season opening, crowned by Alejandro Valverde’s four victories
Movistar Team missed only two top ten finishes in its 16-racing-day schedule in the month of February, coming to an end on Sunday with the 182-kilometer Clásica de Almería, from the Andalusian province’s capital to Roquetas de Mar. Spanish road champion Fran Ventoso claimed the 6th spot into a race greatly controlled by the telephone squad in all stages, not letting the day’s breakaway gaining more than five minutes of advantage. Australian Mark Renshaw (BLA) outsprinted Reinardt Janse Van Rensburg (ARS) and Francesco Lasca (CJR) in a race where Movistar Team won the teams’ classification after all their riders made the top 40.
February thus comes to an end with four Blue successes scored by Alejandro Valverde in Mallorca (Trofeo Serra de Tramuntana) and the Vuelta a Andalucía finishing on Wednesday, where he took an impressive two stages and the final overall. The 2nd place by Valverde at Andalucía’s stage one, the 2nd spot by Rui Costa in the Queen stage of the Volta ao Algarve -where he finished in 5th position- and the third places by Rojas and Valverde at Ses Salines and Murcia, respectively, where other big results into a month that is leaving place to two Italian classics from Saturday -the Strade Bianche and the Roma Maxima- and the return of the World Tour calendar with Paris-Nice, on March 3-10.
