Spaniard takes 6th after great work from Movistar Team mates, shows great form in view of another two predictable sprints in the Tour of Beijing
190km almost entirely flat from the Olympic rowing channel in Shunyi to the Huairou studio city opened the 3rd edition of the Tour of Beijing, the final event of the 2013 WorldTour and Movistar Team’s third season in pro cycling. The telephone squad focused their efforts in this debut on helping out Enrique Sanz for the mostly predictable bunch sprint, with several of their members -Dowsett, Gutiérrez or even road world champion Rui Costa- at the front of the bunch for the last 15k, once the four-man breakaway jumping from the very start -with Cordeel (LTB) as the last survivors- had his days numbered after attacking within themselves in the finale.
Spanish champion Jesús Herrada was the man saved to make a strong lead-out into the final kilometer, leaving Sanz in perfect position for the bunch kick. Norwegian Thor Hushovd (BMC) beat Slovenian Luka Mezgec (ARG) by few centimeters to take the first red leader’s jersey, with the Spaniard finishing in 6th. Before the mountain stages on Sunday and Monday, there will be another chance for the fastest guys on Saturday, with the longest stage of the race covering 202km from Huairou to Yanqing. Sanz will start the day as 8th overall.
