An emotional salute that brought massive joy to both fans and team-mates. Intxausti started his best season to date raising his arms to honour his old friend Xavi Tondo, who would have turned 35 today

It had been two gruelling Giro weeks, even harder due to bad weather forcing the organisers to shorten the Galibier climb on day fifteen. The riders had to tackle a very nervous stage after the second rest day, with a short climb close to the finish of Ivrea.
Beñat Intxausti jumped away into the descent with Tanel Kangert (AST), Przemyslaw Niemiec (LAM) and Robert Gesink (BLA). After the Dutchman was left out of contention due to a mechanical, Intxausti had to take full responsibility for a thrilling sprint, with the main favourites on his back. The talent by the Basque rider -not really used to such finishes- made Movistar Team claim their third victory in this year’s Corsa Rosa.
