Vuelta a Asturias (final)

Nairo Quintana takes 2nd overall in Vuelta a Asturias behind Raúl Alarcón (W52), confirms himself in good form before starting Italian grandtour

Spaniard Raúl Alarcón (W52) won the overall classification of the 60th Vuelta a Asturias on Monday after a final attack through the decisive Alto del Violeo (Cat-2) took him to a solo victory on the 121km stage three, from Cangas del Narcea to Oviedo.

Seven seconds were the margin for Alarcón over a pursuit group where Nairo Quintana (Movistar Team), who had attacked in the first place -responding to the Blues' optimal positioning work before the narrow entry to the climb-, took 5th in the day and sealed his second-place overall finish.

"I'm happy to have finished the race unscathed, with good physical condition, ready for the Giro challenge," was Nairo's quick reaction after stepping onto the podium, alongside Alarcón and Óscar Sevilla (MED), who took 3rd place via the final sprint's bonus.

José Herrada was a fine 7th at the finish today, at the fore of a selected peloton also including Antonio Pedrero, and completed the weekend's racing in 15th overall.
