Strong last outing of the season

Colombian from Movistar Team takes 9th place in Como after strong climbing and several attempts before the final sprint. Nibali (TBM) wins solo.

Italian Vincenzo Nibali (TBM) took the day’s honours at the 111th edition of Il Lombardia -247km from Bergamo to Como, with six tough climbs and no less than four ascents into the last two hours of racing- after leaving the bunch behind into the ‘salita’ of Civiglio, dropping break companion Thibaut Pinot (FDJ) and holding off his rivals into the last fifteen kilometers.

Nairo Quintana (Movistar Team) in turn completed another great race after his 4th place in Milano-Torino, with good legs and attention to all main moves from his rivals in the finale. Well covered by his team-mates before the hardest climbs and supported by Jesús Herrada, who picked up the pace into the Madonna del Ghisallo, and Anacona, who followed some of the attacks, the Colombian stayed near the top contenders and also tried to accelerated several times on both the Civiglio and San Fermo climbs. In the end, a seven-man group caught Pinot and contested third place into a sprint led out by Nairo himself -Alaphilippe (QST), 2nd at the finish, was ahead of that pursuit-.

It was 9th place for the ‘Cóndor’ to close a season with six victories -including two overall triumphs: Tirreno and Comunitat Valenciana- and 23 top-ten finish, crowned by a second place in the Giro d’Italia in a year of highs and lows for the Colombian superstar.

A negative note to the day’s racing was Anacona’s crash into the downhill of the Ghisallo, at the very same point De Plus (QST) and Bakelants (ALM) suffered serious incidents. Despite the Colombian, who also abandoned the race, initially thinking it was only “minor blows and bruises“, pain to his leg persisting overnight will force him to undergo checkups which rule out any major injuries.
