Chrono des Nations

Basque TT specialists closes six-year brilliant career in Movistar Team colours with second podium finish at Chrono des Nations, just over a minute behind winner Madsen (BHS).

Danish rouleur Martin Toft Madsen (BHS) took a convincing win at Sunday’s 36th edition of the Chrono des Nations, a 49.7km course in Les Herbiers (Vendée), France, over mainly flat roads slightly damp by light rain and including a small climb, Alouettes, near the start.

Madsen was the only rider able to complete the course in less than one hour, putting 1’22” on countryman and under-23 World Champion Mikkel Bjerg (2nd). Three seconds behind the latter came Jonathan Castroviejo (Movistar Team), who completed a successful six-year career in Blue colours with 3rd place.

It was a consistent outing from the Spanish ITT champion, quickest through the first two intermediate checks yet overshadowed by an amazing Madsen, whom ‘Castro’ was putting twenty seconds on after 12km yet only 6″ halfway through the course, before he went on to open massive gaps on his rivals. Castroviejo takes his second podium finish in the race after coming 2nd to Vasil Kiryienka in 2016.
