Valverde, Movistar Team complete loop around Madinat Zayed at the front of the bunch; decisive ITT, mountain not coming before weekend.

European road race champion Alexander Kristoff (UAD) took the win on Wednesday’s stage one of the 2018 Abu Dhabi Tour, over 189km in and around Madinat Zayed covered under unusually low temperatures -only around 20ºC-, which should dominate the week’s racing in the Emirate.

Headwinds in the finale -the riders enjoying favourable gusts in the beginning of the stage, the route mainly consisting of two carriageways connecting the start and the Liwa oasis- made the race finish around half an hour behind schedule, the peloton staying more calm before the end as the Movistar Team always kept Alejandro Valverde at the front. The Spaniard will be chasing glory in this race only as the weekend brings the two decisive stages in the race, with a 12km ITT in Al Maryah (Saturday) followed by the famous Jebel Hafeet climb on Sunday.

After a day in the interior, the race will head back to the coast and the capital city on Thursday for stage two, 154km from the Yas Mall to the Beach nearby.
