Tirreno-Adriatico (st. 1)

Movistar Team finishes 50" behind BMC at 'Due Mari' opening team time trial in Camaiore.

Local rider Damiano Caruso (BMC) took over the first ‘Maglia Azzurra’ in the 2018 Tirreno-Adriatico after the US-registered squad’s victory in the 21.5km team time trial held in Lido di Camaiore on Wednesday.

The Movistar Team, conditioned by stronger winds due to their starting slot, first of all 22 rosters present in the race, went for a consistent effort from all of its members, with no big accelerations, to reach the line with all seven riders together, 12th in the day at 50″. The result leaves Mikel Landa, Andrey Amador and Jaime Rosón, the Blues’ main climbers for the week, equal with leaders like Fabio Aru, Rigoberto Urán (-5″), Vincenzo Nibali (-1″) and Miguel Ángel López (+3″).

The ‘Corsa dei Due Mari’ will go for its least hard route to Follonica (167km) on Thursday, before three lumpy, mid- and high-mountain routes from Friday through Sunday, set to decide the Italian WorldTour event’s GC result together with the closing ITT in San Benedetto del Tronto (10km) on Tuesday.
