Barbero 6th at flat, unfavourable sprint in Castrojeriz

Vuelta a Burgos (st. 2)

Great Movistar teamwork to favour Spaniard's chances in bunch kick, ultimately won by Matteo Moschetti (PLK). First mountain-top finish at Picón Blanco on Thursday.

It was a really flat, fast finish which didn’t really suit his conditions, yet Carlos Barbero (Movistar Team) didn’t want to stop seeking for a victory in the 2018 Vuelta a Burgos, trying to bounce back from misfortune on day one with his puncture just 3km from the Alto del Castill0.

The local hero, perfectly supported by Rojas, Oliveira, Valls and Anacona in the wind-exposed roads through the final 20km of stage two to Castrojeriz, made Barbero stay under shelter until the closing straight, with José Joaquín as final leadout. Sadly, the more powerful legs from his rivals took the better of a punchier Barbero, who got just 6th behind winner Matteo Moschetti (PLK).

None of the seven Blues had troubles to stay into the main group, which keeps Anacona (+10″), Rojas and Valls (+12″) still near the top of the standings before Thursday’s first mountain-top finish: the Picón Blanco (Cat-1; 9km at 9% gradient).
