Tour de Romandie (st. 2)

Spanish allrounder from Movistar Team into early escape as local hero surges to take famous win. Betancur (5th), Anacona (10th), Sepúlveda (13th) remain well placed in GC before weekend's stages.

Swiss TT specialist Stefan Küng offered his home crowd a great exhibition on stage two of the Tour de Romandie, a 174km route under the rain from Le Locle to Morges where a six-man early break including Jorge Arcas (Movistar Team) took the better from the sprinters’ teams in their only chance of the week.

The Sabiñánigo native’s attempt, formed just 2km into the stage, split after good work from the Spaniard at the final climb of the day, Reverolle (Cat-3), as Küng attacked to bring only Backaert (WGG) and Bagdonas (ALM) with him -Arcas trailing behind- and later going solo to win by almost one minute on the bunch.

The Movistar Team stayed well put and together in the main field, keeping its main GC references sheltered as Carlos Betancur -still in 5th, 14″ behind Primoz Roglic (TJV)-, Winner Anacona (10th) and Eduardo Sepúlveda (13th) remain fully in contention. The three Blues have three big days ahead from Friday’s stage three, with a mid-mountain course around Romont followed by Saturday’s Torgon mountain-top finish and Sunday’s TT showdown in Geneva.
