Analysis

It’s a well-balanced route for the Tour de Suisse, the longest men’s race for the Movistar Team in 2019 after the three Grand Tours. There’s terrain for every kind of rider, including -as custom in the Helvetic event- two time trials: an opening ITT, 9.5km in length, in Langnau im Emmental (Saturday 15th); and a fast-paced stage eight (Saturday 22nd) over 19km in Goms / Ulrichen.

Between those, and as explained prior, there will be room for all finish scenarios. A demanding circuit -with two Cat-2 ascents- around Langnau itself (Sunday 16th); opportunities for the fastest legs in Murten -uphill finish; Monday 17th-, Arlesheim (Tuesday 18th) and Einsiedeln (Wednesday 19th), the latter two with difficult climbs near the end; and three big mountain days around the final weekend.

Thursday 20th, the riders will take on the Flumserberg (Cat-1), 8.5km at 9%. Friday 21st, a very long stage seven (216km) will end with the Lukmanierpass (Cat-1; 16.5km, 5.3%) and the San Gottardo (HC; 12.4km, 7.1%). And to finish things off, on Sunday 23rd, a high-mountain, well known course -already covered in the 2005 race- in the Valais area: Nufenen, Gothard and Furka, all ranked ‘hors categorie’, before a final descent into Ulrichen.
