Open letter to the fans

Cabo Frio native ends his link to the Telefónica-backed squad with immediate effect, will seek to continue enjoying cycling at his home country.

“I want to let you know today I’ve decided to return to my country, after five years competing in Europe.

I’ve reached so much further that I could have ever imagined. I’ve enjoyed racing many of the biggest cycling events in the world. I’ve shared peloton and experiences with some of the greatest in the sport. And I’ve become friends with so many people from this beautiful family.

All of that, while carrying the Brazil flag around the world, as I did for a whole year after my national title in 2022, and further enjoyed with an unforgettable experience at the recent Paris Olympics. This has been an indescribable honour.

“My mind and body are now asking me to enjoy this sport in a different way. I feel I’ll enjoy in Brazil the kind of freedom I’m not able to achieve here in Europe. I feel I’ve still loads to give in cycling, and I’d like to do it in my home country.

I want to thank all squads, team-mates and coaches that have supported me over these years. The Movistar Team has been my home as a professional, and I sincerely thank Eusebio Unzué for his comprehension and patience all over these three years. Also to the Valverde Team, and Alejandro Valverde, as well as the Telcom squad.

I don’t want to forget our kind sponsors Telefónica and Vivo, which support cycling and other sports at both sides of the pond, and make possible for us to reach further.

“We’ll see each other really soon. The road goes on.”
