Movistar Team strengthens its sporting structure with the appointment of Juan Carlos Escámez as its new Sports Director, following a long career in professional cycling and more than 15 years as a member of the team’s staff.

A native of Novelda (Alicante), Escámez is one of the most respected figures in the international peloton. Trained as a physiotherapist, his hands have worked with some of the world’s best cyclists, and he has been a trusted confidant of riders such as Alejandro Valverde and, more recently, Enric Mas.
His deep understanding of riders and his outstanding strategic vision in racing have not gone unnoticed by the team’s management. Sebastián and Eusebio Unzué proposed that he take this step into Sports Management as part of the natural evolution of the team’s structure.
“The idea came up several years ago in a conversation with Sebastián, who had previously spoken with Eusebio. They proposed it to me during Alejandro’s final years, and they felt I had the ability to take the next step, to move into this area, into management,” Escámez explains.
The new Sports Director acknowledges that the right moment to take on the role did not come at that time, as he chose to complete his work alongside Valverde and later to continue supporting Enric Mas, who also placed his full trust in him.
“Now, with internal structural changes and as we adapt to new times, we’ve seen that this is a good moment to revisit those conversations and have the courage to take the step,” he adds.
Escámez approaches this new stage with enthusiasm and responsibility:
“I’m extremely grateful for the trust they’ve placed in me. Change is always daunting, but we’ll keep adapting and improving.”
With this appointment, Movistar Team continues to strengthen its sporting project by investing in experience, internal knowledge, and human talent as key pillars for the future.
