Analysis

The 44th edition of the Vuelta a Burgos includes all characterist ingredients from previous years -the Castillo climb (stage one; Tuesday 2nd), Picón Blanco (stage three; Thursday 4th) and Lagunas de Neila (final stage; Saturday 6th)-, yet presents them in a way slightly different from the past.

Before the slopes of the capital’s lookout climb, halfway through the opening stage, the riders will take on a traditional ascent from this race, the Altotero (Cat-1). The Picón will be, in turn, not a finishing climb but a passage, crested just under 40km from the finish in Villarcayo, with Retuerta (Cat-3) right before + Bocos (Cat-3) just after. And to reach Neila, the riders will cover a slightly longer route from Lerma (170km), yet still with three Cat-3 ascents prior to the race’s main col.

Another finish which has to be taken into account and returns from previous years is the Clunia uphill on Friday 5th, one where the sprinters and punchy climbers must have their say.
