Analysis

The 2020 Strade Bianche was scheduled to be the first European event of the UCI Women’s WorldTour in its original March date – and will remain so as it returns for this reduced post-pandemic calendar, located after the Navarra / Durango classics as the opening top-tier race of the summer.

The route of this beautiful race in Tuscany remains unchanged from its original slot. It’s a 136km parcours in and around Siena, with eight sections of the popular ‘sterrato’, the white gravel roads of this province in central Italy, plus lots of ups and downs in the last forty kilometers. The finale is tackled after no less than five offroad sectors, including Monteroni d’Arbia (67km), nearly ten k’s long.

The decisive ‘sterrati’, though, will be the final stretches of Monteaperti (-25km), Colle Pinzuto (-20km) and Le Tolfe (-13km), sectors before which the key moves for victory could have already started – as it happened in the past few years. If not, the fate of the contenders will be decided at the brutal slopes of Via Santa Caterina (16% max.), right before the finish at Il Campo in the heart of Siena.
