Analysis

The men’s UCI WorldTour calendar for 2022 starts again in the Emirates with the 4th edition of the UAE Tour, which keeps its distinct characteristics intact for 2022.

Three stages are, in principle, slated to be key when it comes to the general classification. Riders will be climbing Jebel Jais (Wednesday 23rd February), with its endless 22km at 5.3% to the highest point of the country, just one day after a short, straight, intense 9km ITT in Ajman / Al Zorah (Tuesday 22nd). The final day of racing, Saturday 26th, will bring the traditional, well-known Jebel Hafeet, already a classic of the early season, with just 10km at 7% average.

We earlier said ‘in principle’ because the other four stages, those destined to end with a bunch sprint, can always turn into dangerous due to crosswinds, which have often split the peloton in these areas. While stages two (Abu Dhabi), five (Ras Al Khaimah) and six (Dubai) are raced on predominantly urban roads, the opening one, next to Madinat Zayed, is held on open roads and could be more treacherous.
