Analysis

An extra 30km has been added in 2023 to the women’s Amstel Gold Race, which thus becomes similar in mileage to the other WorldTour spring classics.

The main factor resulting into this extended course is an extra lap (now four to be completed) to the key, decisive circuit around Valkenburg, with the ascents of Geulhemmerberg, Bemelerberg and, most importantly, Cauberg, just 2km from the finish in Berg en Terblijt.

The result of that is the steep ascents before the circuit are further away from the finish, in quite a different role: Kruisberg (61km), Eyserbosweg (64km), Fromberg (68km) and Keutenberg (73km), with its maximum slope of 20%, are now about 80km from the end, playing as a first selection.
