Analysis

“Cycling in a sea of olive trees and gravel roads.” This is the own-imposed definition of a race which has really left its mark with just one edition covered, its influx into Spanish cycling bringing it back into relevance.

Seven ‘sterrato’ sectors -the first one on the original profile was scrapped in the days leading up to the event- are the essence of an otherwise really tough route, almost a climber’s course, full of long ascents especially in its second half.

Other than the two sectors on the final circuit (6.4km each; the last one completed with less than 3km to go), another three (those marked as 3, 4 & 5) have really significant slopes, all of those sections covered halfway through the race. The race should be quite selective already before the final loop, which starts with 30km from Baeza’s finish, where the ‘Golden Olive’ will be awarded to the winner.
