Since the organising rights are property of the Federazione Ciclistica Italiana, the palmarès of the former monikers of the Giro is respected for this new race. Therefore, the Movistar Team is defending its title, as Annemiek van Vleuten won the Giro Donne in 2022 and 2023.

Analysis

In its first edition under the organising umbrella of RCS Sport, the same company in charge of the men’s professional and under-23 events, the Giro d’Italia Women presents itself as an excellent opportunity for the Movistar Team – winner of four titles at the recent National Championships in Europe and America – to transform the course of its 2024 season.

The Blues will tackle a well-balanced, attractive race, which starts with an individual time trial – 16km, with a short slope near the end – in Brescia (Sunday 7th July) and continues with two bunch sprint opportunities in Volta Mantovana (Monday 8th) and Foligno (Thursday 11th). Day three (Tuesday 9th) will bring the first mountain-top finish in Toano, 12km at 5% to end a ‘unipuerto’ stage, on flat roads till the final climb.

The second half of the race will be brutal. Urbino’s Wednesday 10th finish will be reached after a very hilly course, over San Marino (Cat-2) and the Monte Osteriaccia (Cat-3); the 154km ‘Tirreno stage’ (Friday 12th), finishing in Chieti after a thousand slopes, will be a race of attrition; and on Saturday 13th, a ‘tappone’ awaits (+3600m), twice up the Passo Larciano to end atop the Blockhaus. The race will come to its conclusion in L’Aquila (Sunday 14th), with +2,500m elevation and the Cat-1 Castel del Monte along the way.
