A historic moment for the Movistar Team. 19 years after their last appearance to date in the Volta a Portugal, back when they were called iBanesto.com, the Telefónica-backed squad will head – full of young riders – to the start of the 82th edition of the so-called ‘Grandissima’. This demanding, always-spectacular event always sees the local teams riding with courage and motivation, the Portuguese fans holding their ‘Queen race’ in a special place of their hearts.
A 5.4km prologue in Lisboa (Wednesday 4th) will open a race which features a route really well known by the event’s regular teams. There’s absolutely no clear sprint chance -only the finishes at Setúbal (Thursday 5th), with a Cat-2 climb before the end, and Castelo Branco (Friday 6th) look any likely-, with breakaways more suited to succeed in this course than a fully-fledged ‘volata’.
The two most famous mountain-top finishes are Torre (HC; Saturday 7th), over the highest point of continental Portugal, and Senhora da Graça (Cat-1; Saturday 14th). However, there’s some other hill-top arrivals, in Guarda (Cat-3; Sunday 8th), Santo Tirso (Cat-2; Tuesday 10th) and Montalegre (Cat-1; Friday 13th). The Volta will end with a 20km ITT in Viseu (Sunday 15th), also well known by those contesting the race every day.
