2013 UCI WorldTour trophy presentation

Eusebio Unzué and Alejandro Valverde receive trophies as top finishers in the WorldTour ranking from UCI president Brian Cookson

The headquarters of the Spanish Sports Council in Madrid was the venue for the trophy presentation of the 2013 UCI WorldTour, its rankings dominated by Spanish cycling after claiming all individual, team and nation awards. Movistar Team had double protagonism in the event as they were handed over the prize as the best team from last season, with Eusebio Unzué receiving the trophy from UCI president Brian Cookson, as well as the 3rd position in the individual classification for Alejandro Valverde. It’s a massive moral boost in view of the 2014 season, which the Blues will start in exactly one month with the Tour Down Under and the Tour de San Luis in Australia and Argentina.

REACTION:
Eusebio Unzué: This WorldTour No. 1 is not only a reason to be proud of this team: it’s also a reward for everyone who makes part of the group. Team classifications are sort of a therapy in such a particular sport as cycling, a team sport which nonetheless gives all major prizes to individuals. The trophy makes justice with the big efforts the lads made throughout the year, and this first place in the WorldTour rankings are a consequence of our regularity all over the season, ever since the start of it in Australia on January and up to the final race in October, in China, our last chance to conquer the win and where we were fortunate enough to overtake Sky in the standings.”
